Abstract

Objective: To determine the frequency of hospital acquired anemia in patients ofacute myocardial infarction.

Methodology: This cross sectional observational study was conducted from 6June 2014 to 6 December 2014 at Cardiology Department, Lady ReadingHospital Peshawar. In this study, patients who were admitted with acutemyocardial infarction and normal baseline hemoglobin level at the time ofadmission (according to WHO criteria) were included. Hemoglobin wasrechecked on 5 day of admission to see whether patient develops hospitalacquired anemia.

Results: A total of 246 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) wereincluded in the study. Of these patients 137(55.69%) were males. Mean age was57.9±11 years. About 58 (27.57%) were hypertensive while 48(19.5%) werediabetics. Chronic kidney disease was found in 9(3.65%). Mean baselinehemoglobin was 14.3±1.2 g/dl in males and 13.42±1.31 g/dl in females whileon follow up it was found to be 11.4±1.72g/dl and 10.3 ±1.67g/dl in males andfemales respectively. Hospital acquired anemia (HAA) (hemoglobin< 12g/dl infemales and <13g/dl in males) on 5 admission day was found in 50(20.32%).Patients found to have HAA, 23 (46%) were females and 27 (54%) were males.
